Are you packing your signed issues back in the boxes they were filed in, or are you keeping them separate? I don't know what to do. I kind of like having all the signed stuff together.
By the way, I thought the safety razor was the straight edge one! What's the big difference between the safety razor and the modern Gillette/Wilkinso variety?

I keep them in a serperate short box, next to my short box of rare/expensive comics.

What's safe about a safety razor?
wolf_2099
02-15-2009, 05:18 PM
It`s safer than a straight razor.
Straight razors have been around forever.
Safety - Late 18th Century. Much safer than straight razor.
Gillete plastic. WW1 ish.
Oh, it's safe compared to a straight razor? Yeah, okay.
Stocky Boy
02-15-2009, 05:44 PM
My point being that th safety razor looks like one evolutionary step behind the modern, Gillette Fusion variety of razors. So, how is the safety razor safer?
Well, obviously it isn't. It's just an archaic name for something that USED to be safer than the other stuff.
wolf_2099
02-15-2009, 10:05 PM
Well, obviously it isn't. It's just an archaic name for something that USED to be safer than the other stuff.
Ding ding ding.
It went\
Straight
Safety
Modern Gillette
So it is an old term for a safe razor, when your only other option was a straight edged blade.
It was just never re named.
I went electric ever since I stopped being clean shaven. I really have to be, I'm using Wilkinson Sword with way too many blades on it.
So, Cameron, I meant to ask : how many comics did you get during your NYCC trip?
wolf_2099
02-20-2009, 02:28 PM
135 regular comics, about another 35 bought and signed. And 1 copy of the Kickback trade by David Lloyd.
What are those 135 comics?
And how did you pack that?
wolf_2099
02-20-2009, 04:12 PM
Put them in a plastic (3 actually). taped them in bricks of comics, then stuck them in my backpack.

Not so much epic as frustrating. I forgot a bad on my connection, and I was very ill when I got back. it sucked.

I'd actually like to cut that down to about 60 comics, but I think there are a few mini series ending soon and heavily delayed titles on that list.
Comics are too expensive and not good enough, as of late.
True. I've always made budget for 10. I might change that, found a shop which ships comics for way less than my shop, but I'd have to order each month from Previews. This means I might get 15 comics/month, but since I'd have to look every month what I'd want, I'd be much more pickier and change my list more often.
wolf_2099
02-23-2009, 06:40 PM
I was considering looking online to see what comics cost for online subscriptions.
I would not stop using my store completely, but might cut it down to 30 books in the store and then order online.
Can't help you there, the online store I'm thinking about is in Holland. They do ship outside Holland, but I doubt that with shipping costs it would really be worth it to you.
wolf_2099
02-23-2009, 06:55 PM
I`d be looking at a US site like mycomicshop.com, or, fuck, even midtown.
I know you said milehighcomics is expensive, but quite a few people I know here use it. Maybe they don't know about other stores, but I doubt it. I guess the dollar/euro rate has something to do with that as well, though.
wolf_2099

I never looked at it for subscription, just back issues.
Just found a whack of comics to add.

Holy crap my crotch has been sore for the last 2 days. I should see the doctor, and yet, I am supposed to be on a plane tomorrow.
but I'd have to order each month from Previews.
You don't already do that? No pre-order for you?
Uh, yeah, but I've simply got a list at my shop. And I hardly ever change that since I'm too lazy for it and don't really like hopping around and get only bits and pieces. That, and I'm usually a bit behind the curve, so hopping on with the third issue of a run seems so... hopeless. If I've got to look at it each month, I know I'll be much more critical at what I get. That'd be a good thing, though.

Torsion Surgery 6 months ago, then the recovery. A week or so ago I aggravated them again, along with pulling my groin. Had to get another exam and ultrasound. Unpleasant.
What's torsion surgery exactly?

Your sperm cord that brings the blood to your testicle gets wrapped around it, cutting off blood flow and causing excruciating pain.

03-05-2009, 01:40 PM
You pulled your groin? Ouch.
Why must all your pain happen in your loin area? :D
wolf_2099
03-05-2009, 01:48 PM
Apparently since I had a problem when I was a few months old, I was likely to later in life, get a torsion testicle. The torsion then made me likely to suffer other injuries in the area.
Stocky Boy
03-05-2009, 02:08 PM
Fucking hell!
Better make sure you do your stretches before kicking anything!
Did you parents only tell you about the problem, when you were younger, recently? This kind of reminds me of my uni friend who started having panic attacks at uni. Turns out it's heriditary and so his folks always knew there was a chance he'd get it.
wolf_2099
03-05-2009, 02:46 PM

By the way, how are your high kicks?
Can you do the splits in any direction?
For grappling, I do a few stretches to help me out with some of the 'guard' work we do there.
I've never done much high kick work other than with pads. I mostly stick to hands, when I did do sparring.
Which is your favoured leg?

Which is your favoured leg?
My favored leg has switched to my left. It is now more powerful and smoother than my right, thanks to over working my right. I can kick someone my height in the head, although not as well, as I am not as limber as I was a month ago. Working on that.
I can do the splits to about a foot off the floor, which is pretty good for a guy my height. My instructor cannot do the splits, although he is close.
Stocky Boy
03-09-2009, 03:22 PM
Very interesting. I think my split level is also a foot off of the ground, but then I'm closer to the ground than you, so this is clearly relative.
How about putting your foot behind your head? :D I can do both feet - not at the same time though!
How much time do you dedicate to sparring and padwork?
Incidentally, did you get your NYCC09 t-shirt?

I have also had a lot of groin injuries lately, so my stretching has not been great.
Lately it's been all padwork, I'll start sparring again soon, I've just been too sick/injured. What about you?

I am in a home, on a corner lot. We share a wall with 1 other house, who is on the corner itself.
Some guy in a white truck managed to knock over a telephone poll on the corner, which splintered badly on the street. Which then possibly took out the bus shelter in front of my house. It was either the pole or the truck. It was 2:40 am.
His truck then proceeded to drive over my lawn, and into my neighbors tree. If there had been less snow, or if he had been driving a little more to the right, he would have taken out the front of her home.
After doing all these, he then proceeded to flee on foot.

Jebus. 221 Comics.
Mike Allred and his Wife are both very nice people. Stopped and chatted with every person who came up to them. Personally signed everything, quite cool.
Steve Niles and Frank Cho were also very awesome. I noticed that at these smaller con the people seem to enjoy chatting a bit more, as it is much more low key.
I got there about 11:15 Saturday morning, and found Mike Allred and his wife, he had a line up. My girlfriend stood in line for 5 or 10 minutes while I tried to track down where everyone else was.
Steve Niles and Frank Cho had no line-up, neither did Darwyn Cooke. I ended up getting all the autographs I wanted in the first 45 minutes, and had chats with them all at some point through the day. Darwyn Cooke and Mike Allred were the nicest.
Dave Johnson was also awesome, funny seeing him stuck between Allred and Cooke though.
Oh, and the surprise special guest, since Tahmoh Penickett had to cancel?
Admiral Adama.

I got...
The X-Force comic I had signed by Peter Milligan, and Fables 57 signed by Mike Allred and his wife, Laura.
Catwoman 1 signed by Cooke and Allred.
30 Days of Night I had signed by Templesmith, signed by Niles. Steve Niles was at NYCC this year, by the way.
100 Bullets that was signed by Azarello and Risso, also signed by Dave Johnson.
Green Lantern signed by Ron Marz.
Ultimate Spidey Annual 2 signed by Mark Brooks
Ult. Marvel Team Up 14 by Terry Moore
Ult. X-Men 84 by Yanick Paquette
X-23: Target X by Mike Choi and Sonia Oback
and a Liberty Meadows comic by Cho.
Wally, I got your Frank Cho comics signed. I could use your address, too.

Cons in France? The only con I've ever been to was the Crime/Noir convention last month. It had about 20-30 writers.

wolf_2099
04-30-2009, 03:00 PM
So, at the comic show I finished my JSA and JLA runs.
Got a bunch of Waid Original Captain America run.
Titans first series.
Finished Young Justice.
A bunch of Frank Millars Daredevil.
Some Queen and Country.
A fair chunk of Waids Impulse run.
Batman: The Long Halloween 2 to finish the mini.
Waid's Empire Mini Series.
And the highlight...
The entire run of Preacher, plus one-shots and specials. It was not cheap, but it cost me less than cover price.
Stocky Boy

I finally read Final Crisis 7.
I have no idea what Final Crisis was about, nor do I have any idea what the impact was/is on the DCU.
What the fuck?
Bruce Wayne is dead/lost in time. That's about it. I think.
wolf_2099
05-05-2009, 02:43 PM

So, after completing (though not reading, so many issues to read):
MK Punisher
Young Justice
Impulse
Titans
Waid's Captain America
JLA
JSA
Impulse
Ronin
Marvel Boy
Teen Titans
Millars DD
Queen and Country
I need to find more things to read/collect:
I was thinking of:
Animal Man 1-26 - Morrison
Doom Patrol 19-63 - Morrison
100 Bullets 1-100 - Azarello
Stormwatch Vol 2 1-11 - Ellis
Starman 0-80 - James Robiinson
Swamp Thing 20-64 - Alan Moore
Anyone have any thoughts on these series, any good? Anything else I should look at?
Anyone read Millars Give Me Liberty stuff?
I also want to go back and re-read Planetary, Authority, and maybe re-trying the first few issues of invisibles.
Not sure about Stormwatch, but the rest is definitely great.
wolf_2099
05-07-2009, 01:25 AM
Oh, and Hellblazer I think, too. I think I see a lot of it at flea markets.
But it's 250 some freaking issues.

Mr Wallstreet
05-07-2009, 04:41 PM
Having only read 100 Bullets, Swamp Thing and Animal Man, those are the ones I'd reccomend.
I'm collecting 100 Bullets by Azzerallo and it lives up to the hype of being a fantastic noir series. Its got a gritty setting, great characters, and a huge bastard of a mystery that spins several different ways.
The drawback is that, like many other Vertigo titles, this one should be read in paperbacks/storylines or what have you or else it may not make as much sense and also has several different smaller stories going on at any given time that in some way feed into the larger story.
I continue to collect the 100 Bullets paperbacks but haven't read any in a year or 2 because the paperbacks are released so far apart, I'd forget everything that happened in the last X paperbacks. I'm waiting for the last paperback to come out, then I'm going to re-read the entire series.
Animal by Morisson is also a great read. People call it some of Morisson's best work due to a few extra unusual issues he wrote; I didn't get that level of depth from those issues, but definitely an interesting and entertaining run.
Alan Moore's Swamp Thing is okay; I have his entire run in paperback and am slowly making my way through it. It's enjoyable, and people have called it the definitve interpretation of Swamp Thing, not sure I'd agree with that wholeheartedly but it does stand apart from other interpretations of ST.

All these comics I couldn't read until I have the series complete, and read them in a row.
I can get pretty much all of Starman online for 120 bucks, which is tempting.
I am also leaning towards getting 100 Bullet off ebay in a lot, that one will have to wait though, it's slightly pricier.
Animal Man is also short, so I am leaning towards it as well.

I'm pretty sure we don't have those in Korea. When I changed my cell phone, they transferred the data on the computer. They didn't take anything out of the old phone and put it into the new phone. (At least that I saw.)
Except the battery, cause they were trying to rip me off selling me a phone with no battery just because it was the same as the battery in my broken phone. Motherfuckers. Sadly they found a battery somewhere so I didn't get a discount.
SIM card doesn't mean expensive cellphones. Hell, I didn't even know they were doing phone that don't require SIM card.

They do in Canada because the majority of phones are locked to a provider. The phones still have a SIM card but you don't really know about it and can't do anything with it.

I was thinking of trying to pick them up.
I haven't read them.
Though I'll probably get them one day as they are milestones in comics history.
I've got the Batman storyline. It's been ages since I read it, I rather liked it back then. No clue if it holds up today, but I think it would still remain as a good storyline.

Yeah, if I find it, I shall let you know.
In other news.
I've been reading more Morrison, and in turn, Quietly.
Holy crap, the majority of Morrison stuff, makes so sense. He writes a dense story, with good bang for your buck, when it makes sense. When he hits the mark, it phenomenal, but I find the majority of his work far too confusing to even follow.
I've noticed something similar with Quietly. When he is good, it's awesome, but you can tell when he is getting sloppy, and his work goes to absolute shite. But again, when it's good, I love it.

Dinky little comic and toy expo here this weekend.
http://www.comicandtoy.ca/
I have no idea who the guests are. (Well, what they did.)
Apparently though, John Byrne stopped in at my LCBS this week and hung out for a while. He was apparently a great guy.
Also went to a film Festival this weekend to see Trick R Treat and saw Gaslight Anthem play a concert.
Also topped it off with a little z-trip.
http://www.winsportcanada.ca/cop/activities/ztrip.cfm
Out of all this list of guest, I'd kill for a Kaare Andrews sketch. He did some stuff in the early issues of Ultimate X-Men, a Spider-Man mini and very cool Hulk covers during the Bruce Jones run. Very singular style. Meek? loves him, I think.

Would any of you blokes mind doing me a favor and next time you are at your local comic book establishment, check and see if they have a copy of Catwoman: Selina's Big Score for (or close to) the cover price?
It's by Darwyn Cooke, and has a section that takes place in Montreal. I can't find this damn thing in store, and don't way to pay the high prices on the net, and hoped somewhere not in Canada might have a copy kicking about.
I'll definitely look around for you.
Wouldn't you be interested in getting Batman: Ego and other tails, which contains Batman:Ego et Selina's Big Score, both from Darwyn Cooke?

Mr. Wolf spits on the trade paperback format. :) Don't you remember?

It makes me sad when I find out there are only trades of a comic.
On another note. Kick boxing has started after the winter break. We are going to be focusing more on traditonal Muay Thai rather than American Kick Boxing.
What does that mean you ask?
More upright grappling, flying kicks, knees, elbows, clinches, and other fancy, hard to do stuff. It's going to be hard. Very, very hard.
I am now off the banana republic to try and return washed merchandise since it shrunk from something that fits me to something that would fit Stocky after one wash.
And no, it did not go through the dryer.
Fuckers.

Will you be doing downward elbow strikes? Those are very, very, very nasty. Only bad people do those. MMA says no.
Have you got a change in instructors or something?
Incidently, which trade were you talking about?
Asked my retailer, he doesn't have "Selina's Big Score". The contrary would have highly surprised me.

No change in n insturctors! How did I not notice before.
Fights in Calgary are changing from more traditional kick boxing to Muay Thai, so he is switching the training to more Muay Thai.
Also, it seems like I am going to Vancouver Saturday to watch a hockey game, yay!

That meant to say no Darwyn Cooke, I'm surprised.
And sad.
I'm reassured, I thought you wall post on Facebook was about the NYCC. Twilight at NYCC would make me reconsider going.

Do any of you gentlemen happen to frequent used book stores?
My comics shop is also a used book store.

That's awesome.
So, is your comic guy grumpy or nice?
Was talking to a gentleman yesterday and we agreed comic store owners tend to be very grumpy while used books stores guys are generally very nice.
Arn, did you ever read the Hunter that Darwyn Cooke adapted, or tried the Parker Novels?
He is kinda grumpy but stays nice for regular customers.
I read the first Parker novel and also the Cooke adaptation. I liked both. I have the 2nd and 3rd Parker novels in my "to be read" pile by my bed.

I am starting to believe, after reading some current Grant Morrison and Alan Moore stuff, that some of these comic writers might have just done too many drugs, and cannot really tell a coherent story any more.
What's Alan Moore writing these days?

Not much currently except a little thing here or there for Avatar Press.
I was reading a little of his avatar stuff, the new neonomicon issue, then some older stuff, Supreme, Wildcats, etc.

I just had drinks with Chris Claremont.
Woo and hoo.
Do you ask him what he was hoping to achieve back when he came back to the X-Men with the dreaded 6-months gap?
Mr Wallstreet
04-23-2010, 07:35 AM
Did you ask him why he hates the X-Men so much?
Did you ask him why he always writes those horribles long speech bubbles that cover 75% of the pages?

No, but I will tomorrow.
In what order should I ask?
Mines first.
Take some pics will you!

And get an autograph for Stocky. You know how much he loves Claremonts work.
I remember how much Stocky usd to rave about Claremont's stuff, in fact I bet he still enthusiastically collects Claremont's work.
Meek too.
Meek worships Claremont. So does Mitch. Oh and CBKA!
Mr Wallstreet

Ask Claremont what his fucking problem is.
Please

Are you guys joking, or do they really like Claremont?
CBKA and Meek! do like Claremont.
Mitch read X-Treme X-Men so I guess he likes him too.
