I am on the fence about the facebook, really. Isn't that mostly putting your information out there publicly? Is that so smart?

You can put as small or as much info as you want out there. You can hide your email address and you can choose not to put in pertinent information in. Only real thing most people have available is their real name, and not even everyone has that available (one of my "friends" there is Rand Posting, which I'm pretty sure isn't their real name lol). You can just set up a basic account and leave it at that, not even putting in your birthdate (or just hiding it from everyone).
