Great story by Busiek about Conan's formative years. The only thing I didn't like was the art. Greg Ruth, it seems, is an acquired taste.

I'm guessing the Ruth's dreary and gray art was meant to convey how hard and unforgiving life in Cimmeria was. Problem was that the art was just looked so damn ugly. The characters looked like pale blobs and they all had saggy facial expressions.

The Cimmerian landscape, never looked right at all. The colors never matched the mood of the scene. I can understand the gray, dull and dreary look in winter and late fall but during spring when the entire forest and surrounding area is in full bloom and the sun is shining, the tone of the art still doesn't change; it's still dull and dreary.

One of Busiek's last works on the series before he departed. A great story is wrapped up in shitty art. Next time you're in a book store and see it. Flip through it. If you decide the art isn't as bad, I would reccomend you get it.
