Green Lantern is heading down under.

As officially announced by New South Wales premier Nathan Rees, the film version of DC Comics’ Green Lantern will be filmed at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film version of DC’s space hero has a budget of $150 million – a figure that places the film ahead of Iron Man’s estimated budget of $140 million, and in line with the estimated production budget of Watchmen’s, which was also $150 million.

Rees said that the film’s production, directed by Casino Royale director Martin Campbell will create 500 jobs for the local economy, and THR reports that the film should be eligible to receive the 15% location rebate from the Australian government, in addition to incentives from the New South Wales government. In short, Warner Bros. will be getting more production for their money, thanks to the decline in the value of the Australian dollar.

Pre-production on the film is slated to begin in July, with filming on the film with a script by Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim to begin in November. Currently, Green Lantern is scheduled to open on December 17th, 2010.

Big/great news is that its being filmed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) and though I had some problems with it, it was an overall great movie. Still haven't found any news on casting though...

Well, Brian Austin Green wants the part. :D

Also, I have never read anything good from Marc Guggenheim in comics. But maybe he is a better screenwriter.

When I heard Guggenheim was writing I was apprehensive.
DC really needs a win with this movie though, especially considering the budget.

I really want to know who stars.

Georges Clooney as Hal Jordan and Catherine Zeta Jones as Carol Ferris. :D

As long as Andy Garcia is Sinestro and Brad Pitt plays Pieface I'll be sold! :D closest I'll get to another Ocean's film!

But i'm excited for it and hope that it does amazingly well, even though I was sad to hear WB thinks someone like Nathan Fillion is already too old for the role. He'd have been great as Hal, and I'm thinking he could have possibly pulled off the Green Lantern side of things as well.

If Clooney gets the role as Hal Jordan, will the director be required to put big rubber nipples on the GL costume? :D

According to multiple sources, Warner Bros. is down to three choices for who will play Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern film: Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake.

I would take Firefly dude way over any of those guys.

I think a younger Eric Bana with brown hair has the look to play Hal.

None of those guys look as stern as I always felt Hal to be.

That came out kind of weird.

Reynolds it is.

I haven't seen Wolverine Origins. Apparantly Reynolds has done some serious roles before. I really do wonder if WB are planning on taking the GL film down an action/comedy role though. Afterall, they've casted Ryan Reynolds.

Roll on the trailers!

Reynolds may have done primarily comedic work but he has done a few serious roles here and there which I thought were, at the very least, good. i.e. Amityville Horror an Smokin' Aces. He's done a few more serious roles but these are the only ones I've seen.

I think Reynolds is a good solid choice, not just in comparison the Cooper and <shudder> Justin Timberlake (how'd he ever get in the running in the first place) but all around. Certainley I believe Reynolds would have been far better as the Flash/Wally West but whateves.

For the time being I'm willing to give Reynolds and director Martin Campbell the benefit of the doubt - that they know what there doing. My only real concern is what the tone of the film will be? Dark and gritty or serious but still light hearted or utterly camp and cheesy ala Batman & Robin and Catwoman

good choice, though I wanted him as Flash to begin with.

Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) cast as Carol Ferris. I have never seen Gossip Girl so I have no idea who she is.

She's also in Accepted playing Justin Long's love interest. She's not bad, but there's an 11 year age difference between her and Reynolds. Also, I don't know if she'll pull off a decent Star Sapphire if this goes franchise.

Her acting leaves a lot to be desired.

What she is quite the hottie. Though I heard there rumors about Eva Green having the part but this would have been a much hotter choice.

She should just be titled Blake Lively's Boobs staring in: now.

Peter Saarsgard has been cast as Hector Hammond though he probably won't be the main antagonist its probably a set-up as a villain for a future GL movie (should this one ever get off the ground and become a sucess). Good choice though.

I can definitely see it as a set-up villain. Unless, of course, they choose to make Sinestro the set-up villain. I can actually see it both ways, having Sinestro start good with a bit of evil showing and Hammond being the big bad or setting it up as Hammond being a supporting character who turns evil at the end (kinda like what they did with The Leader in Incredible Hulk movie).

Yea, I think Hammond is the main villain in this one, and Sinestro is to appear, but like in the books he was the mentor. And what better way to set up a sequel than learning your mentor is actually someone you should stand against?

DC/WB really needs a win with this film if there are any hopes of creating a sucessfull franchise that doesnt have a Bat or \S/ shield on it and I'm not sure how they plan to accomplish that with a big headed funny looking villain. Also, DC pretty much missed out on the entire comic book movie movement this past decade putting out a handful of films while Marvel put out film after film.

I am excited about Jonah Hex though.

There's rambling that Jackie Earle Haley may be up for the role of Sinestro. I think he can pull it off, from what I've seen of him as Freddy and his role in Little Children he's a great evil bastard ;)

As far as looks go for Hammond, I for one won't be terribly disappointed if they scale his head down by about oh, 100%. I don't mind Hammond as the villain at all, but I agree that someone with the head size he's given in comics now, one where his own body can't even support it, that would just be terrible. Maybe increase it slightly, but nothing huge or so outlandish that it's just too stupid.

I think most comic fans would be in agreement there, as the idea of a guy who's head is almost the same size as his body is just toooooooo bad to translate exactly to screen.

Apparently, Haley's been confirmed as a rumor by the director, who said that instead Mark Strong is in talks to play Sinestro. As well as THIS bit of awesome news:

"Well, Kilowag will be," said Campebll. "Tomar-Re is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it. All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it's a complex story. The origin story of Green Lantern is complex, probably one of the most complex, which makes it a challenge to get it right."

Kilowag? Tomar? Holy SHIT how are they going to pull this stuff off?? Maybe Hammond WILL Have a giant head then if they're gonna do Kilowag Abin and Tomar-Re

Yep, read that on Twitter earlier and just got around now to post it. Well, technically you posted it before me but best intentions ;)

I'm excited about seeing Kilowog. Who are they gonna get to play/voice him? Gotta be someone gruff and forceful. Imagine Kilowog with a sweet song voice? Actually, that'd be awesome!

Tragic Angelus
01-15-2010, 07:14 PM
Well I mean, if they want to do just voice work they could pull anyone who did his voice in the JLU or the GL animated, but I suppose it depends on how they want to go about doing him in teh film. Will he be fully animated and CGI? most likely.

Or are they going to do a sort of Darth Vader deal, with someone playing him and someone else providing the voice? Or even like they did with Thing in FF, where they suit was there and the actors voice was altered in post to make it more gravely.
