Advisor sounds big, but it isn't. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do yet, but here's what I know:
I'll be working 40 hours/week at a company that advices architects and building developers. The advice is about every technical part that goes along with the building process. Mostly it'll be judging whether the building will pass all regulations and whatever rules one might run into. And if not: advise how things could be done.
From what I understand it's case-by-case work. So I'd do all the advice on one case, instead of giving part of the advice (and thereby specializing in just one small part of the whole).
About 20-25 co-workers. In a smaaaallllll town that'll be an hour drive from Amsterdam, without traffic. Yes, Amsterdam. I'll be moving in with my girlfriend. In Amsterdam. Rotterdam vs. Amsterdam is probably the Dutch equivalent of Eastside vs. Westside. But I think I'll manage. :D

Sounds like a pretty sweet gig, well done again M! :D
And another hearty congrats on moving in with your girlfriend. :D :D
Excellent news!!
Now Malorie and I can plan holidays in Amsterdam, we know where to crash. :D
Also, I laugh at you for working 40 hours. I only do 36.5.
And lastly, how much does it pay?
Not nearly enough, but at this point in the economy I'm happy to have something. And I know what I'll be able to ask as a raise in about 6 months, so it's all good.
And you can crash, but we've got only one spare bed so it's either you or Malorie on the couch! :D

Congratulations Mitch!
Hope the move goes well.
Is 40 hourspw standard?
Pretty much. There's also quite a few people (in government mostly) who get paid 36 hours/week, but work 40 hours/week. Basically, that earns them 5 weeks of extra vacation per year.
I'll drink some Amstels tonight to celebrate....congrats!:coolgleam:
Please don't. For my sake ,do not drink Amstel or Heineken. Drink a decent Belgium beer. :D

name me some other ones I might be able to find here...
I dunno how many Dutch beers ship internationally. Could very well just be Heineken and Amstel. You could try for Hertog Jan or La Trappe, though. Those are pretty good Dutch beers.

Stella ain't that bad. But probably about the same, I definitely aren't a fan of Heineken and I loathe Grolsch.
Dutch boy, where are the pics?
Of you and Jess, damn it!
Back from vacation (I know I didn't advertise it) and it was AWESOME. Great weather, fun stuff to do, fun stuff to see and it definitely could've been a week longer.
Tomorrow, work starts. I'm interested to see how that'll go.

I think you mean capris. Formal capris even, if such a thing exists.
Also, good luck Mitch! :D
Thanks!
Wallsy Wall-e, things are pretty good at the job. Fun co-workers and the work is not bad either. Not entirely inspiring, but I'm learning quite a few things that can come in handy if/when I get to work at an architecture firm. Than again, it's only been a bit over a week, so I'm sure the more fun and thereby inspiring stuff will follow later on.

So what's a typical day like at work Mitch?
Also, when are you and your gf going to move in together?
Somewhere in the near future.
Anyway, I bought the other week:
A t-shirt. With four stormtroopers crossing Abbey Road. :coolgleam:
But it's an AWESOME shirt. :D
They also had one with Darth Vader gardening and cutting a tree into the shape of the Death Star, but I did't get that one.
So. Finished everything for an architecture contest, handing it all in tomorrow. This was purely for fun, I rather doubt anything'll come from it, but it's to stay a bit in form. And to fiddle arounda bit with all the programs to see how everything works again. I'll throw it all in the Creative Café sometime tomorrow.
Booked a flight to London for the first weekend of January. Okay, second weekend. Stockwell, you'd better have a drink with my girl and me!

I think it goes without saying that we expect you Dutchies to bring those biscuits with you when we meet in NYC.
What? You can have some when you come to Holland for the summer. :D

Architect working as an advisor: moving in with his girlfriend in Amsterdam.
Hell yes!! Holidays in Amsterdam, here we come!!
And what do we gain by that? :D
Well, moved in for a week now. Living room is almost done for the moment (except for a desk thingy that I want to design myself and an amplifier for my speakers). Study's almost done as well, just one more shelf to put up on the wall and then organize all the paperwork. Bedroom will need some more work, with a closet and some work to be done on the bed. Spare bedroom is mostly full of boxes and laundry at the moment. And when that's all done, the loggia needs a bit of paint, so we can make that a livable space as well. But, Most things will definitely be done in a month or so.
Glad to hear that! And his work? Everything going smoothly on that side?
Just got a nee contract for a year, so for the time being that's going well.
The house is shaping up to be awesome. Most things are done, except for a few big projects: a closet in the bedroom, a self-designed desk-thingie in the livingroom and refurbishing the loggia. These things will take a bit of time, and then there's the audio-set. But other than that, things are going smoothly.
We demand more pictures of your newfound lovenest.
When things are nearing completion (yes, that can be while)... oh, probably somewhere this weekend I'll throw some on FB.
Fuck. Natascha's been on holiday the past 10 days (birthdays of grandparents) and was supposed to land tomorrow morning at 7:15. Due to technical problems it'll likely be 4:15 tomorrow night. :(
Not only was I looking very much forward to her, I also cleaned up the loggia rather nicely (paint, flooring) and that surprise is rather lost when you get home in the middle of the night.
Oh snap!
New amplifier, CD-player and the cables to connect everything with my speakers and TV. Only to wait what it'll cost to connect the amp to the computer and I'll be done with the audio for the house at the time being.
:chewie:

Buy Natashcha pretty things.
Right. Here I thought it was merely the deadline.
Deadlines? What did we introduce you to Jim Lee for?
To learn how to miss deadlines, obviously.
Unfortunately, I'm not THAT much of a procrastinator.
Damn, we'll have to go back then. You still have a lot to learn.
In other news, I bought a car.

In other news, I bought a car.
I got a new one, too!
What did you get?
Ford Focus, from 2006. I had my parents' old Volvo 460, but that one broke down for good. So I needed a new one (since I drive about 700 km/week), and this one felt right from the minute I got in. Pic's at FB. What did you get?
700 km a week? In Holland? How?
The French Biscuit
11-07-2010, 04:17 PM
I have a 70 km commute.
That kinda bites, but then I hate long commutes. I'm glad I can walk to work.
And in other news, I'm glad to tell all NYCC2010 go-ers that I've managed to find myself yet another awesome piece of G-Star apparel.
For fuck's sake, is it weekend yet...?
It's been weekend as of 3pm today.
16:45 was my first beer of the day.
Unfortunately, as the 30+-year old soon-to-be-father, my weekend have stopped starting with beer. :(
This is a wrong turn in life.
I know. But what can I do?
Start the beer again.
Or divorce Malorie, never see the baby and live your life like the bachelor you are. ;)
Goddamn, you're right!!
I'm gonna leave the house right now.
I'll be sure to leave your phone number on the table so she can call you to ask for an explanation. :D

I really want to make a joke about coat hangers and stairs, but I really like Arn and Malorie, so I will just imply the joke and say;
Arn's weekends will no longer be his own for another 18 and a half years, they will however, come with joyful memories he can remember.
Or you know, he can secretly drink beer in the bathroom.
Agh, flu. And I have to go skiing this weekend. Awesome timing.
Apparently in Austria, with my co-workers. They'll have fun. Since I've never done it before.
First time skiing? Well be ready for your legs and upper arms to be sore. Very sore. Also, very wet! Have fun!
Thanks! Fortunately, I'm feeling better already.
Also, you can ski? Of all people who I imagined who could ski, you're not among them somehow.
I skiied only once in my life, last year. It was fun at first but I got fed-up of falling on my wet-ass all the time.
If I go again, it'll be for a week and I'll take lessons to learn properly.
Hey, that sounds exactly like me experience. Of course, my experience also included getting the flu again (which apparently wasn't really gone yet). And also lots and lots of beer. God, lots of beer. :D
Thank God for those beers, otherwise that weekend would've been a complete disaster. I had great fun, but that goddamn flu takes a lot away from it. *sick*
Oh, for fuck's sake, is it weekend yet? *dies*
Mr Wallstreet
02-08-2011, 09:08 AM

It's always time for binge drinking. Tuesday liquid lunch!
Although I share the sentiment, unlike some of us, I have to work from Monday 'till Friday. Binge-drinking therefor is reserved for Fridays and Saturdays.

Well then, binge extra hard this weekend?
Where do you go when drinking? Club, bar, house?
To be honest, I'm not that much of a binge-drinker. I never get really wasted.
But, a bar it'll be.
Hurrah, 8 hours of work and then weekend!
Deadlines. Nice. I started at work 11 hours ago. I think it might be time to go home somehow.
Not legal in France to work more than 10 hours a day.
I'm not surprised, with all those slackers over there. :D
Also, those 11 hours did include a break, so all in all I think I worked about 10, 10:15 hours.
At work at 6:45, seriously...
On the other hand, beer and food and merriness all around yesterday at work. So it evens out, I suppose.
And in other news I might be out of a job soon. The company's having a difficult time and out of 17 people, at least 5 (I know of) will not be be there in a bit. I might be a sixth. My contract ends this month and the owner has stated he'd like to keep me on board if they can manage how. Very presumably, at least the way I understand it, they'll offer me a 3-month contract Somewhere between 3 and 12 months, he said. I'm thinking more towards the 3, than. So, how that'll turn out is a big question. And if they can still offer the contract.
Also, for the time being this is no Facebook news.
Shit man, that sucks. I hope it all turns out well in the end. Keep us posted!
wolf_2099
03-03-2011, 03:00 PM
That really does suck, hopefully they can find a way to extend your contract.
Tragic Angelus
03-03-2011, 03:12 PM
Really sorry to hear that, and I hope at the very least they can keep you on for quite a few more months rather than not at all. Did they give you a time frame of when you'll know for certain rather than the end of the month coming and them telling you that day? I hope it works out well for you rather than you having to leave.

03-03-2011, 03:57 PM

The French Biscuit
03-12-2011, 10:54 AM
That's some dark news. Naturally they are amazed at your talents and work ethic (10 hour day? I max out at 9) and will try their bestest to keep you. :)
Right (still no Facebook news this, BTW!).
So, as of April 1st, I'll be working for at least 3 months. Because that's the length of the new contract they gave me. I sorta expected that. Apparently the financial advisor of the... I dunno, I suppose the CEO? What's the owner of a relative small business called? Anyway, apparently the financial advisor was dead set against giving me a new contract. There simply is no money. Of course, it's nice to know they really want to keep me for the company. On the other hand, it gets me into a dilemma.
The con's and the pro's:
Pro's:
Expectations are that in the second half of the year there'll be more work and if that indeed is the case, as soon as they can, they'll lengthen my contract to a year or indefinite.
I really, REALLY like working at this place with the co-workers I have. The atmosphere at work is really good, too. Actually, it's somewhat unique. I doubt that I'd find this sort of chemistry with co-workers in this line of work anywhere else.
The location of the office is really nice, in the center of a little town. It's actually qutie a nice office too, with lots of space.
Con's:
Of course, expectations were never that they would have to fire people this month. Who's to say expectations will come true?
I know that a company where a friend works needs people, I'd fit the bill perfectly. The work there would more or less be the same, but probably with more possibilities to do more on the field I'm really interested (sustainability). Small con on this one is that said friend will grow into being my boss. No problem with that, but I can't just freewheel into a job application, since he knows I might look for a job soon. If I apply, I can't back down afterwards.
So it more or less comes down to maybe working with seriously fun people and in a good office versus applying for a somewhat more interesting job with unknown people in an uninteresting office. Which is also no guarantee for work.
I've openly discussed this with my boss, also explained that I really hate to leave the ship at the first sign of trouble. He was quite understanding about it all. He promised to keep me updated on how things progress the coming months. I think I'm keeping on the lookout for new jobs right now, but won't start actively applying until 4 weeks from now. If things haven't changed by then, it's time to move on. If they actually do improve, my dilemma is gone. If I can keep working here, I can always in the future see what that other job might be (if it's still there, of course).
I think waiting a bit more to see how the situation evolves is the wise thing to do.
Hey, just heard there was a shooting in Holland. Hope all your close and loved ones were not at the place. Take care!

Holland isn't THAT small. ;)
But, thanks for the thoughts. And no, no one I know was involved in that.

BB King is amazing.
To be honest, BB King was lacking. His band was awesome. But he talked too much. I'd rather have him let Lucille talk.
Anyway, bored at work. As in, don't want to work. Friday 4 PM and I've already worked 50 hours this week. Something to do with a shitload of work. So, not so awesome. But right now I feel like GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!! Of course, I already know I'll take some work home with me.
Hopefully, the paycheck is on par with the hours.

He was like that when I saw him, too.
I think it's just because he's old. When he did play, I thought it was great.
First day of vacation. First layer of paint on the doors.
Heard an old co-worker passed away. Apparently he had a heart condition no one knew about. The guy was my age. Although I hardly spoke to him in the last, say, 8 years it always WAS fun when I ran into him. I liked him, wouldn't say he was a friend, though. An acquintance. Maybe a friend back when we worked together. It is odd. Not like I'll actually miss him. Just knowing I'll never run into him again and have a chat.
Still, it feels strange. I'm too young to have people my age die. Wish I could go to his funeral, but I'm not in the country. :-/
Sorry to hear about that.

Nothing much, really. To be honest, it was a body pump lesson and the instructor told me to go easy since it was my first time. Apparently I took it too easy. All I feel is a little ache in my shoulders, chest and biceps.

I automatically went where Wulf went since my brother does dip (chewing tobacco). Yet I completely understand the post-meal dip in energy. "Is it time to go yet? It was so nice out of my cubicle."
No no... apart from the fact I don't have a cubicle, I think I worked on half capacity all afternoon. Because THAT was my top capacity.
Also, Jesus Christ, my arms are killing me.
90 minutes of only punching and push-ups.
wolf_2099
10-13-2011, 01:30 AM
Nice!
How many push-ups in a row can you do?
To be honest, no clue. Probably not more than... well, 20 serious ones. Pushing up less deep is easier, of course. But the strength in my upper arms is not nearly as good as it should be for kickboxing. And I'm also not interested in lifting weights to increase that strength. I'll probably do pushups at home once or twice in the week.

Do twenty when you wake up, and twenty before bed and you'll see improvement very very quickly.
Making an inventory of all my comics and rearranging them. How fun.
Also, actually my left thigh seems to be rather injured. I got a few good kicks on it last week and while it hurt, I figured it was more of the same. But it's been more than a week and it's not gotten less. Actually, slightly worse. Doctor tomorrow, probably physiotherapist after that.
I suggest using comicbookdb.com
I also suggest to stop fighting.

Ha! That coming from a Frenchman, priceless. I actually have fights this weekend!
How is the kick boxing coming other than the leg?
If it's above the knee, you're probably fine, and it's just bad muscle soreness, pretty common for new people.
If it's the knee, you should kick whoever is kicking you in the knee in the balls.
I actually just used an excel spreadsheet for my comic list, I always found those comic book sites lacked a lot of comics.
I'm using the Collectorz.com software. Not cheap (and their mobile app is ridicilously expensive), but it's pretty good.
The injury is above the knee. And I doubt it's bad muscle soreness. That feels different (I think, never been injured before). It's a sharp pain when making certain movements with my leg. But nothing extreme, and in daily use I don't have a real problem with it. I'll just see what the doc says about it.
Apart from that, it's pretty cool. I was just thinking about going twice a week. I do need some agility, though.

Agility, as in flexibility, balance, or both?
If you guys were doing leg kicks it really could just be a bad bruise, which is what I will hop for for you. (Which you can't always see).
Outside of a broken leg, it's really, really hard to do anything other muscle damage from leg kicks. Muscle damage will just heal on it's own pretty easily. All this is assuming you didn't somehow tear something in your knee
Mind you, that muscle damage can hurt like hell, for a while, especially if you weren't using shin guards.
Good luck at the doctor, always the smart thing to do.
Flexibility. My balance is usually pretty good.
Well, I did get a few kicks to the leg during sparring (and always with shin guards). I'm thinking it's muscle damage (as in, a rip in the muscle), something that should work out fine with some rest and possibly some therapy.
It is actually muscle damage, though. I didn't really get hit on the knee and the only thing I feel in my knee is an irritated tendon or muscle, but that seems to be because the pain (wel, not-so-nice feeling, pain's a strong word) is radiating down from my thigh. The most sensite spots are on the inside of my thigh (about 5 to 6 inches up from the knee, no clue how that spot got hurt, I don't think I've been hit there) and the backside of my thigh (about 4 to 5 inches up from the knee, that one definintely is directly from a kick).

Getting kicked on the inside of the leg is the most sensitive spot, and best place to kick someone. Chances are if you even got tapped there you'd be feeling oit
You have also, what I believe is the IT band running down the outside or your leg. It could be that.
In fact, it could have nothing to do with getting kicked kicked, and just be you hip or your knee screwing eveything up and causing the pain.
If you injure you ankle, knee, or hip even a little bit, your knees and hips take up the slack, and cause all sorts of havoc on your legs. It's unpleasant.
I have that happening right now, I'm getting acupuncture for it tomorrow.
Is your doctor a general doctor, or specialized?
I found my family doctor generally worthless when it came to sports injuries,
and always had to go see a physiotherapist or sports medicine doctor. They'd always be able to figure it out right off the bat.
The family doctor would always want x-rays and prescribe an anti-inflammatory, both of which were not needed.
If I'd have to hazard a guess from pictures, I'm guessing it's the biceps femoris and the sartorius (or the adductor longus) I'm feeling.
In Holland, it's standard procedure to go toe a family docotor first. No clue how good mine is, I've never been there. But I expect him to send me to a physiotherapist. I have to see the family doctor first, though. Otherwise the insurance company might get shitty about the costs of the physiotherapy.

1612 comics and 251 TPB's. Somehow I figured it'd be more.
Of course, there's still Natascha's collection. And the short box with comics from my cousin. Those I didn't count.

Spot on, probably. According to the doctor there's no muscle damage. To be honest, I didn't really expect that anyway. I figured there'd be more pain involved. On of the bruises on my thigh dropped to the back of my knee, so it's pretty explainable.
On a different note, what's up with your leg, than? Acupuncture?

Tiger balm or icy cold will be your bet friend. They are both a kind of menthol gel for sore muscles. They're great.
Also, the soreness never really goes completely away, but it gets a hell of a lot better and you'll legs will get much tougher.
I've got icepacks. Tiger balm is more something for soreness, right? Bruises and the like work better with cold.

I'll do Nataschas collection next week, probably.

Yeah, it can help though.
I always found icepacks wouldn't sit properlym on my legs, knees, etc.
I'm glad to hear you're not seriosuly hurt!
Have either of you guys hyad a problem with either of those databases not having your comics?
I ran into two unknown comics. One rather obscure one, but the other one was a Dreamwave Transformers TPB. That surprised me.
comicbookdb.com allows to create new entries. So whenever I couldn't find a comics in their database, I created it. And that only happened once or twice.
Wheee... absurdly busy at work, laptop broken and car needs to be fixed. When is this week over?
