New ongoing series starring Zatanna

This morning on The Source, the blog of the DCU, Zatanna, a new ongoing series, was officially announced with a launch of May 2010. Previously announced writer Paul Dini will be joined by artist Stephane Roux on the series featuring the backwards speaking magician.

No big! They announced they book awhile back with Dini attached on it and I've been waiting for more info for months! The preview artwork over on the DCU Source Blog looks really good, so I'm excited for it.

Only downside is I had just about balanced my Pull list for May, for each book I was dropping with a new that was starting covering it. But I really think this one will at least be temporarily on my list. See how the first few stories go.

What's the appeal of Zantanna?

To me it's mostly just that the regular DCU doesn't really have any other mystic books or something like that, and Zatanna's the one place they will put that.

If Dr. Fate still had a book, Phantom Stranger, or Shadowpact was back it'd be there too. But for me, I like Zatanna because she's part of the Satellite League that I really like, so I'd like to try to keep up with her.

I’ve always felt Zatanna was/is an interesting character and like Tragic said there aren’t a whole lot of titles about mystics and sorcerers around so that’s part of the appeal as well. Also Paul Dini is writing and he can write the shit out of anything so that’s another huge factor. If this title were being written by someone else I’m not sure I’d be as likely to follow. I read the Spectre ongoing they did some years ago and that was just awful. Similarly the Deadman mini DC released a long time back wasn’t too bad but it certainly wasn’t worth the cover price either.

I picked up the Deadman book that ended around issue 9, and I really enjoyed it. It was right when I was shifting to DC, picking up new starting titles and not so high profile books like the new Green Arrow and Hawkman, Deadman and the Doom Patrol with a new set of characters. I liked the magic side in Deadman but it ended quickly, and I enjoyed the Days of Vengence mini, but heard the ongoing Shadowpact really just wasnt worth it.

Like Wally said, Dini is someone who can really write a great book so I'm hoping he pulls thru on this one. I'll give it the initial trial run I usually do and if I like it, I'll keep up with it.
